BERKELEY (AP) – Jalen Cone tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Jaylon Tyson flirted with a triple-double and California cruised to an 83-63 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Monday night in Haas Pavilion.
Â
Cone made seven of his 16 shots from beyond the arc – including five first-half makes – for the Golden Bears (2-1), who bounced back from their first loss of the season last Friday. Tyson, playing in his second game as a Bear after missing the season opener, totaled 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Fardaws Aimaq posted 14 points and seven boards while Devin Askew and Grant Newell scored 12 and 10, respectively, as all five starters finished in double figures.
Â
The Bears' ball movement resulted in a season-high 18 assists to a season-low eight turnovers. Cal also pulled down 45 rebounds, with four players – Tyson (12), Newell (8), Aimaq (7) and ND Okafor (7) – grabbing at least seven apiece.
Â
"It was really great to see a single-digit turnover stat from us," Cal head coach Mark Madsen said. "That is a step in the right direction, because we hadn't moved the ball like this in prior games."
Â
Cal made 11 of its 15 3-pointers – one shy of tying a single-game school record – in the first 20 minutes of play, translating to a 49-34 halftime advantage. The Bears were in foul trouble throughout the contest, sending CSU Bakersfield to the free-throw line 20 times in the first half and 33 total.
Â
Askew, who wore protective sunglasses due to sensitivity to light after getting poked in the eye against Pacific last Friday, added four rebounds and four assists to his 12-point effort in 34 minutes of play.
Â
"(I'm) really proud of (Askew) for how he came out and controlled the tempo, got everyone involved, knocked down shots, got us into our sets," Madsen said. "To have a player like Devin Askew with the maturity, the basketball IQ, the leadership, is invaluable to this team."
Â
Kaleb Higgins had 22 points to lead the Roadrunners (1-2). Modestas Kancleris pitched in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cameron Wilbon scored 10.
Â
The Golden Bears host Montana State on Thursday to finish off a four-game homestand to begin the season.
