SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (AP) – The California men's basketball team used a stingy second-half defensive effort to force overtime before ultimately falling 76-67 to San Diego State in the SoCal Showcase on Saturday.
San Diego State made 9 of 10 free throws in overtime and Jaedon Ledee added a pair of jumpers to outscore Cal 13-4 in the extra period. The Golden Bears (2-5) were just 1-of-7 shooting from the floor in overtime.
Cal trailed by as many as 12 with 9:24 remaining in the contest but climbed back by holding San Diego State (5-1) without a field goal for the final 11:33 of regulation. Rodney Brown Jr. hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Fardaws Aimaq hit 3 of 4 from the line to tie the game with 1:42 left and force overtime
Reese Waters hit 6 of 11 from the field, including 2 of 3 from long range, and was 10-for-10 from the line to lead the Aztecs with 24 points. Ledee added 19 points, going 7 of 10 from the line. The Aztecs collectively were 31 of 37 from the line (83.8%), compared to a 12-of-18 effort by the Bears.
Jaylon Tyson hit 9 of 21 from the field, to lead the Bears with 23 points – his fourth game with 20 or more – before fouling out of the game. Aimaq had his fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Grant Newell added 11 points and eight boards to round out Cal's three double-figure scorers.
Cal was without Devin Askew (foot) and Jalen Celestine (foot) for the fourth straight game, while Keonte Kennedy (hand) remained inactive to start the season.
