ROLLING HILLS ESTATES – California men's tennis teammates Carl Emil Overbeck and John Kim advanced through main draw singles in the Dennis Rizza Jack Kramer Invitational on Friday to set up an all-Golden Bear quarterfinal Saturday.
 
Overbeck and Kim were two of six Golden Bears competing on the opening day of the Southern California event at the Jack Kramer Club. The top-seeded Overbeck earned a first-round bye and then defeated LMU's Alexander Nothdurft, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 16. Kim posted two wins, including a 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3 result over UC Santa Barbara's Lucca Liu in the round of 16. Overbeck plays Kim on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. PT.
 
Cal freshmen Timofey Stepanov and Ethan Schiffman won in the singles round of 32 but fell in the round of 16.
 
In doubles, the pair of Kim and Jonathan Irwanto beat UCSB's Pierre Boullenger and Gianluca Brunkow, 8-7(4). The Cal tandem next plays Cal Poly's third-seeded Noah Berry and Colter Smith in the quarterfinals Saturday at 2 p.m. The fourth-seeded Overbeck and Stepanov earned a first-round bye Friday and will face UCSB's Luka Mrsic and Conrad Brown in Saturday's quarterfinals also at 2 p.m.
 
DALLAS – The Golden Bears won six of eight matches Friday, as the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge began at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
 
Cal's doubles duo of Alex Chang and Derrick Chen had two wins, including a 6-1 result over Rice's Petro Kuzmenok and Emir Sendogan. Bears Lucas Magnaudet and Mikey Wright bested Air Force's Nick Vroman and Phillip Deaton, 6-1.
 
Chang, Chen and Magnaudet also won in singles.
 
The Dallas and Rolling Hills Estates tournaments continue through Sunday.
