ROLLING HILLS ESTATES – California men's tennis junior Carl Emil Overbeck won the battle of the Golden Bears on Saturday at the Jack Kramer Invitational, defeating teammate John Kim, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals at the Jack Kramer Club.
 
Overbeck will play UCLA's Spencer Johnson on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT for the right to reach the 12:30 p.m. PT final.
 
Playing in the consolation draw, Cal freshman Jonathan Irwanto beat UC Santa Barbara's sixth-seeded Kai Brady, 6-4, 6-2, in round of 16 qualifying and then earned a bye in the round of 16.
 
DALLAS – The Golden Bears won five of eight matches Saturday in the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge, with Derrick Chen collecting two wins in singles and partnering with Alex Chang to win in doubles.
 
The Cal tandem beat Texas Tech's Reed Collier and Jonas Gundacker, 6-3, at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
 
In singles, Chen beat TCU's Tomas Jirousek, 6-4, 6-3, and Air Force's Arjun Kersten, 6-2, 6-1. Chang bested Air Force's Alex Deaton, 6-4, 6-1, while Lucas Magnaudet knocked off Air Force's Nick Vroman, 6-4, 6-0.
 
The Bears close out the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge and the Jack Kramer Invitational – as well as the first half of the season – on Sunday.
