Former Cal Women's Rowing Coach John Squadroni Passes

Squadroni Was Cal's Head Coach From 1988-93

We're extremely saddened to hear that former Cal women's coach John Squadroni passed away last week. John was the head coach from 1988 to 1993. John graduated from The University of Washington in 1983, served as an assistant coach for the women at UW, and was head coach at UNH prior to coming to Berkeley.

During John's time at Cal the team notched victories over both Stanford and UW. While at Cal John developed Olympic and US National team rowers Laurel Korholz, Shannon Day, Liz Bherens, Betsy Kimmel and Molly Brock.

"John was an excellent coach. He was all about the positive coaching method. He spent a lot of extra time and patience with many of us, working on form, on the pond at Hearst Gym. His coaching and confidence in everyone encouraged optimal performance. He was the role model for how I coach my teams at work today." - Deb Smith Kennedy '89
