Bears Cap Homestand Against Sun Devils
Cal Welcomes Arizona State To Berkeley On Saturday
BERKELEY – The California men's basketball team concludes this week's homestand by hosting Arizona State at 5 p.m. PST on Saturday in Haas Pavilion. It's the only regular-season clash between the Golden Bears and the Sun Devils in 2022-23.
Â
Cal rolled to a 74-50 win the last time the Sun Devils came to Berkeley on Jan. 2, 2022. It was Cal's largest margin of victory in a Pac-12 contest since besting Oregon State 76-46 on Feb. 24, 2017. The Bears (3-21, 2-11 Pac-12) have lost eight straight games dating back to Jan. 11, including an 85-62 defeat by No. 4 Arizona on Thursday night. Arizona State (17-8, 8-6) bested Stanford last night and has won two of its past three following a four-game skid.

Ted Robinson and Don MacLean will have the call for the Pac-12 Network.

NOTEWORTHY
- Sam Alajiki (12 points) and Lars Thiemann (10) scored in double figures in Cal's loss to Arizona on Thursday. It was the 15th time that Thiemann has scored 10-plus points this season after doing so just five times in the first 92 games of his career. Alajiki's 12 points marked his fourth double-figure effort this season in what was his third consecutive start.
- DeJuan Clayton returned from a two-game absence on Thursday against Arizona and totaled five points, four assists, three rebounds & a pair of assists in 34 minutes played. Clayton, who missed the first 13 games of the season and 16 overall, is averaging 9.0 points and 2.6 assists per game.
- Despite losses to both Colorado and Utah last week, Cal held the two mountain schools to a combined 37.3% field-goal percentage. The Bears' 3-point field-goal defense was particularly stout against the Buffaloes on Feb. 2, as they held them to 5-of-18 shooting (27.8%) from behind the arc.
- Cal announced last week that junior guard and leading scorer Devin Askew (15.5 points per game) will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing a successful surgery on a sports hernia on Feb. 1. Askew played in 13 games (all starts) in his first season with the Bears and averaged 15.5 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 3.0 APG, but had missed eight of 12 games leading up to the surgery.
- Joel Brown tallied eight points, five assists and four rebounds in Thursday's loss to Arizona. Brown is playing a team-leading 31.8 minutes per game this season and has averaged 7.5 PPG in the 15 games since Askew missed his first contest, compared to just 4.3 PPG in the first nine of the season.
- Cal's 24-point win against Arizona State on Jan. 2, 2022 snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Sun Devils. The two squads split last season's meetings as Arizona State earned a 71-44 win in Tempe on March 3, 2022. A win by the Bears on Saturday would mark the first time Cal has earned back-to-back home victories over Arizona State since Jan. 21, 2016 and Jan. 1, 2017.
