Two School Records Broken In Albuquerque

Sophomores Toby Lai and Aysha Shaheed Make Program History

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – California track & field had its eye on history as it entered the weekend, sending its distance runners up to Seattle for the Husky Classic and the rest to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Invitational. Having accumulated 24 program top 10 marks and 2 school records to date, the Bears were determined to collect more – and they delivered.

Sophomore Toby Lai posted the first of Cal's two new school records in Albuquerque, breaking a 14-year-old high jump record by clearing 1.85m (6-0.75) and finishing first in the field. Later, classmate Aysha Shaheed won her 200m heat by .3 seconds, breaking the tie that she formerly held for Cal's No. 1 all-time spot and gaining sole possession with her time of 23.77.

Senior Camryn Rogers won the women's weight throw in dominant fashion, posting a mark of 24.04m (78-10) to clinch by nearly 3.5 meters. The men's counterpart featured two Golden Bears – senior Kegan Schroeter and junior Ivar Moisander – in the final, with Schroeter's 19.70m (64-7.75) shooting him up to No. 2 in program history and Moisander's 19.67m (64-6.5) putting him at No. 4.

Meanwhile in Seattle, six Golden Bears (three women, three men) competed in the 3000m race. In her event debut, junior Claire Yerby clinched the No. 7 time in program history with a finish of 9:23.64. Senior Ethan Bersley led the men with his time of 8:16.22.

The squads in both Albuquerque and Seattle will finish the week's competition tomorrow, starting at 7:30 a.m. PT for the former group and at 9:15 a.m. for the latter.
