Three More School Records Shattered On Day Two
MacQuiddy Also Runs Sub-Four Minute Mile
Complete Results – Don Kirby Invitational | Complete Results – Husky Classic
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./SEATTLE – The party continued for California track & field on Saturday as it followed a tremendous first day with an even better second one at both the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Bears ended the weekend with 5 total program records and an additional 15 top 10 marks, leaving little room for doubt that this year's squad could be the very best ever fielded out of Berkeley.
Cal's distance runners posted unforgettable performances on day two of the Husky Classic, with junior
Claire Yerby standing out on the women's side and classmate
Garrett MacQuiddy doing the same for the men. After winning her heat yesterday and setting the seventh-best 3000m time in Cal history, Yerby shaved nearly eight seconds off of her personal-best mile time, winning her heat once again at 4:43.38 – good for No. 5 all-time at Cal. MacQuiddy, meanwhile, reached a milestone that very few men can ever hope to achieve: a sub-four minute mile. His heat-winning time of 3:59.96 was Cal's first under four minutes since 2017, putting MacQuiddy in an exclusive club founded by alumnus Don Bowden (the first American to ever achieve such a feat).
Down south at the Don Kirby Invitational, the rest of the Bears kept pace with their distance-running counterparts in terms of historic achievements. Junior
Jada Hicks set the tone with the first program record of the day, racing to a 60m hurdles time of 8.23. She was not the only women's hurdler to set a new Cal top 10 mark, as sophomore
Jordyn Grady ran a personal-best 8.61 to move up to No. 8; on the men's side, both sophomore
Di'Niko Bates and senior
Riley Hunt reached the final, with Bates (7.87 – No. 5) and Hunt (7.92 – No. 7) each earning their own spots on Cal's all-time list.
Next to reach a school record was sophomore
David Foster, whose 60m preliminary time of 6.65 (followed up by a 6.70 performance in the final) broke a nine-year-old mark of 6.71, followed by the record-setting 4x400m relay team of sophomore
Aiden Lippert, junior
Josh Keller, sophomore
Isaiah Shaw and senior
Henry Larkin. Saturday marked the first-ever competition featuring this particular quartet; they delivered with an all-time program best of 3:12.94, surpassing the previous record set in 2005.
Other program top 10 marks included another performance from Larkin (400m – 47.34, No. 3), as well as a third-place outing from junior
Jake Porter (shot put – 18.08m/59-4, No. 10) and a solid showing from both freshman
Ali Sahaida and senior
Kylie Hilton (pole vault – 3.91m/12-10, tied-No. 8).
