Curry’s School Record Inspires Cal To Victory
Bears Clinch Individual Wins In Five Events
Scoresheet
BERKELEY – It may have looked like just another weekday in Golden Bear Recreation Center for California men's gymnastics, but the stakes were much higher on this Friday afternoon than they would be for a normal practice. With a camera pointed at the floor, broadcasting live to fans as an additional screen showed the men of Springfield College going through their routines 3,000 miles away, the Bears competed in their first virtual meet in two years from the comfort of their home practice facility.
Cal finished the day with 381.200 points to the Pride's 376.350 as one freshman's outing cemented his place in program history. Competing in three events for the first time in a Cal uniform,
Khalen Curry put an exclamation point on his campaign with a score of 14.700 on vault to break the modern school record set in 2021 by alumnus
Caleb Rickard.
"I think the familiar environment helped a lot," Curry said of his vault. "I saw everyone working super hard, and it made me want to push harder and do it for the guys."
As a team, Cal won five of six events, with only the still rings keeping the Bears from the sweep.
A pair of freshman Bears had standout performances to start things off on the floor exercise, with
Harrison Gregory making his Cal lineup debut and posting a score of 13.050 while
Theodor Gadderud improved his personal best by over one full point to an event-winning 13.650. Junior
Noah Newfeld notched another event win for the Bears on pommel horse with his PR of 13.800, following that up with another win (13.650) on the rings.
In addition to Curry's incredible achievement on vault, two other Bears broke the 14-point mark: Gadderud, in his vault debut, posted a score of 14.350, while sophomore
Jasper Smith-Gordon completed a routine worth 14.200 points. Next, it was senior
Noah Sano's turn for an event win, recording a score of 13.450 on parallel bars. Cal finished off the day with Gadderud's winning PR of 13.100 on horizontal bar.
UP NEXT
Newfeld will compete in the Winter Cup in Louisville, Ky., next week from Feb. 24-26. The Bears head back to Stanford on March 4 to compete for the next time as a team as the Cardinal welcome both them and Illinois to Palo Alto.
