No. 7 Cal Rewrites Record Book In Tie With No. 6 UCLA

Bears, Bruins Notch Season-High 197.975 Score

BERKELEY- The No. 7 California women's gymnastics team notched several top-10 marks Saturday afternoon in a 197.975-197.975 tie with No. 6 UCLA.

It was a full Haas for the battle of two of the top teams in the country and the Bears and Bruins did not disappoint the raucous crowd putting up huge numbers with brilliant routines. It was a season-high score for both teams and the second-highest score in program history for the Bears. An additional heart-warming moment came after the meet when freshman eMjae Frazier and her sister, UCLA's Margzetta Frazier, had a chance to embrace. It was their first collegiate competition against one another.

Cal competed five all-arounders and for the second-straight meet a Bear tied the all-time record of 39.700. This week it was Frazier who etched her name into the record book recording three scores of 9.900 or better. Sophomore Mya Lauzon followed up her 39.700 from last week with a 39.675 to finish tied for second with Olympic medalist Jordan Chiles of UCLA. That mark is good for second all-time.

The day began on vault for the Bears where they notched the sixth-highest score in history with a 49.400. Senior Nevaeh DeSouza matched her season-high with a 9.925 and Lauzon followed by tying the third-highest score in Cal lore with a 9.950. Frazier capped off the rotation with a solid 9.875 that moved her team into a tie with the Bruins who notched a 49.400 on the uneven bars.

When the Bears took the bars, more history would be made as they earned the second-highest score in the record book with a 49.650. Four Bears went 9.925 or higher including sophomore Maddie Williams who once again tied her career-high with a 9.975. Frazier and junior Andi Li each secured 9.95's and DeSouza rounded things out with a career-high 9.925. Cal would take a 99.050-98.700 lead into the third rotation.

Next was beam where the Bears tied the program record with a 39.525 with four routines that scored 9.900 or higher. DeSouza got things going by tying her career-high with a 9.925 followed by Williams and Frazier who each carded a 9.900. Lauzon wrapped things up with a 9.925 to keep the Bears ahead of the Bruins 148.575-148.325 as they headed to the final rotation.

The floor exercise brought adversity as the first two Bear routines failed to reach a 9.700. UCLA seemed to sense the opportunity in the air turning in stellar routines on beam to inch closer and closer as the meet came to an end. Cal's undefeated record now rested on the shoulders of Li, Lauzon, and Frazier. The three floor queens answered the call with Li posting a 9.900 and Lauzon and Frazier posting back-to-back 9.975's on the final two routines of the meet. That score ties the program record and each of them received one perfect 10.

Those two incredible performances proved to be vital as UCLA nearly escaped with a win but would have to settle for a tie. Both teams now have two ties this season with both coincidentally drawing with Oregon State.

The final Pac-12 dual meet of the season is scheduled for next Friday, Feb 24 against No. 4 Utah.
