BERKELEY – The No. 29 California men's tennis team will enjoy a busy Saturday after not competing last week, with the 4-2 Golden Bears hosting San Francisco (1-4) at the Hellman Tennis Complex and playing at UC Davis (4-3) at 3 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. NOTE: Due to Saturday morning rain in Berkeley, the start time of the match vs. USF has been pushed back from 9 a.m. to not before 11 a.m. Please check here and check the team's Twitter account @CalMensTennis for further updates.
 

Cal's match vs. USF was rescheduled to Saturday from its original date of Feb. 2.
 
Admission is free for regular-season home tennis at Hellman. Fans can watch home matches through the Hellman live stream by clicking here and can also keep track of the Bears on the team's Twitter @CalMensTennis. Live scores and a live stream are not available for the Davis match, so stay tuned to the team's Twitter for updates.
 
Bears Bash Tigers 6-1
Cal last played on Feb. 2, when the Bears defeated Pacific, 6-1, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Yuta Kikuchi clinched the victory when he beat Peter Alam, 6-1, 6-4, at court-one singles. Kikuchi also teamed with Philip Hjorth – a former Tiger – to secure the doubles point. The pair posted a 6-3 victory over Ran Amar and Terence Das on court two to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears have won two straight matches, including a 4-2 victory over Florida Atlantic in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 29 in Austin, Texas.
 
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 29th in Tuesday's ITA Coaches Poll. In Tuesday's ITA singles poll, Ryder Jackson (14-7 record) is ranked 101st and Yuta Kikuchi (5-3) is ranked 106th. The doubles pair of Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck (4-0) is ranked 58th.
 
Scouting the Bears
  • Cal holds a 37-7 advantage in its all-time series with San Francisco, including a 4-0 win over the Dons in their last meeting in 2020
  • The Bears has an 11-0 all-time record against UC Davis, including a 6-1 win over the Aggies in their last match in 2016
  • In its Jan. 8 dual-match opener, Cal fell to No. 16 Florida State, 5-2, in Honolulu, with Ryder Jackson and Lucas Magnaudet clinching the doubles point and Yuta Kikuchi winning in singles
  • Jackson had an impressive fall, reaching the singles final of the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships and competing in singles in the ITA National Fall Championships
  • Kikuchi posted a big win In the Hawaii Invitational on Jan. 9, defeating Duke's fourth-ranked Garrett Johns, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(5)
  • In the fall, Kikuchi won his first professional singles title when he took the crown at the Norman Open in Oklahoma; the Japan native also reached the singles final of the KPSF Open in San Francisco
  • Sophomore Carl Emil Overbeck has shone in doubles and singles, joining Jackson in the singles semifinals of super regionals and teaming with Kikuchi to repeat as doubles champs in the Battle in the Bay Classic in September
  • The duo of sophomore Mikey Wright and freshman John Kim won the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley in October
  • Kris Kwinta (UCLA '08) is in his second season as the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis
  • Former BYU player Francis Sargeant is in his second year as a Cal assistant coach

Next Time
