Bears Win Their Third Straight

IRVINE – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team began the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with an 8-3 win over No. 17 UC Davis on Friday afternoon, tying a season-best for goals allowed.

For the second time in three games, the Golden Bear freshmen handled the majority of the scoring, accounting for five of Cal's (10-2) eight goals. First-year Bears Millie Quin and Abbi Magee both notched their second braces of the season to lead the way.

Cal's defense made it three straight games conceding five goals or fewer, never allowing the Aggies (7-8) to score more than once in any quarter. Senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams finished with nine saves playing a full match, including shutting down a power play in each half.

After a scoreless first four minutes, the Bears hit UCD with a barrage over the final stretch of the opening period. Four different goalscorers found the back of the net in the last four minutes of the quarter. Junior Ruby Swadling started the run with a goal at the 3:58 mark. The freshmen took over from there, with Quin scoring on a power play, Claire Rowell tucking one away and Magee making it a 4-0 game, all on successive possessions.

Davis got on the board with 2:57 left in the opening half. Quin answered with her second goal a minute later. Williams had just one save before stopping three shots on two straight Aggie possessions, keeping it a 5-1 Bear advantage at the half.

A defensive second half yielded just one goal from UCD until the final minutes. Cal closed the game on a 3-1 run over the final 3:12. Senior Cecily Turner added to her team-leading goal tally with her 18th of the year. Magee secured her brace on a penalty and junior Reagan Whitney capped Cal's third straight victory with a goal in the closing moments.

With its third win over the Aggies this season, Cal moves on to a two-day Saturday slate beginning at 9:15 a.m. against No. 5 Hawai'i.
