Lauzon Ties All-Around Record In Win Over ASU
Bears Off to Second-Best Start in Program History
BERKELEY – It was a historic day for the No. 7 California women's gymnastics team as the Bears topped Arizona State Saturday afternoon 197.600-196.800.
Cal (9-0, 3-0) took home its ninth-straight win to open up the season marking its second-best start in program history. It is now just one win away from tying a 10-0 mark set back in 2015.
The Bears scored a season-high 197.600, which ties the sixth-highest in school history, on the backs of top-10 performances on vault, the uneven bars, and the balance beam. If that weren't enough, sophomore
Mya Lauzon made history of her own, tying the program's all-around record with a 39.700 to capture her first AA title. Senior
Nevaeh DeSouza finished second in that race with a season-high 39.550.
Beginning on the vault, the host Bears got out to a hot start with six scores at a 9.825 or better. Lauzon and DeSouza split the event title with scores of 9.925 that led their team to its fifth-highest score in Cal lore with a 49.425. Sophomore
Maddie Williams took third with a 9.875.
In the second rotation, Cal posted a season-high 49.525 on bars, which ties for 10
th in the record books. Aftter posting back-to-back scores of 9.950 the past two weeks, Williams set a new career-high with a 9.975, which also ties the second-best score in program history. She received a perfect 10 from one of the judges and took home the bars title for the third-straight week. Lauzon posted a career-high 9.900 and tied with junior
Andi Li for the second spot on the podium.
The balance beam event saw Lauzon once again grab gold with a 9.925 in the fifth spot of the lineup. DeSouza, Li, and junior
Gabby Perea each notched a 9.900 in a three-way tie for second place. Their efforts gave the Bears a 49.425, which ties for 10
th in the record book and gave them a 148-375-147.375 lead heading into the final rotation.
Cal experienced some adversity on the floor routine with a pair of low scores from two of their most dependable gymnasts, but once again Lauzon was there for her team. She and freshman
eMjae Frazier would secure back-to-back 9.950's in the final two slots in the meet to split the floor title with Arizona State's Hannah Scharf. An overall 49.225 on floor lifted the Bears to its highest score of the season yet at 197.600.
With more than half of the regular season now in the books, the Bears are ramping up at the perfect time as they will see No. 12 Oregon State, No. 5 UCLA, and No. 4 Utah in the next three weeks. Cal will head to Corvallis, Oregon to face Olympian Jade Carey and the Beavers on Friday, February 10 at Gill Coliseum.
