BERKELEY –
There is an air of excitement within Golden Bear Rec Center as California men's gymnastics prepares for the year's first out-of-state competition – a tri-meet between the Bears, Air Force and Army on Feb. 11 at the Air Force Academy's Cadet West Gym. For the freshmen, it will be their first-ever travel meet; for the veterans, it will be their first trip to Colorado in two years.

The Bears are in high spirits, but know that they will have to overcome challenges associated with Colorado's high altitude. Less naturally-available oxygen can significantly affect performance – particularly at the very end of a routine, according to head coach J.T. Okada. It can be difficult to stay locked in to achieve those precious "sticks" when the gymnast's body is not responding in a way to which they are accustomed.

In part, that is why the theme of the week, written in large capital letters on the Bears' gym whiteboard, is "DISCIPLINE".

"This will also be good practice for the MPSF Championships, which will also be held in Colorado this year," Okada said. "If we can perform well in an environment like this, we should be in good shape moving forward."

The first rotations on Saturday begin at 11:00 a.m. PT, with Cal starting off on the still rings.
