BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team returns home for a nonconference match against Hawaii on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. UPDATE: Due to rain on Sunday, the match vs. Hawaii will now start not before 3:30 p.m. PT.
 
After splitting its last two matches on the road, No. 54 Cal has a 4-5 record (1-1 Pac-12), including a 3-2 mark at Hellman. Hawaii is 3-5 (1-0 Big West).

Cal Posts 4-3 Results In Last 3 Matches
The Golden Bears are coming off of a 4-3 victory at Colorado on Sunday after starting the road trip with a 4-3 loss at Utah on Friday in their Pac-12 opener. Before that, Cal fell to fifth-ranked Michigan, 4-3, last Wednesday in Berkeley.
 
Trailing the Wolverines 3-0, Cal rallied to get to 3-2 before falling in a thrilling match. The Bears got singles victories from Jessica Alsola, Hannah Viller Moeller and Berta Passola Folch. In the setback in Salt Lake City, Cal got singles wins from Alsola, Haley Giavara and Katja Wiersholm.
 
In the triumph over the Buffaloes, the Bears won the doubles point, with the 16th-ranked Alsola and Wiersholm defeating Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed, 6-4, to clinch. Berta Passola Folch also partnered with Hannah Viller Moeller to beat Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac, 6-0. Later, Passola Folch earned the first clinching win of her career when she beat Tokac, 6-4, 6-0, in Cal's first conference win of the season.
 
Bears Edged Hawaii In 2019
Cal edged Hawaii, 4-3, in the teams' last meeting in 2019 to improve to 8-0 in the all-time series. With the score tied 3-3 at the Hellman Tennis Complex, Maria Smith held off Roxanne Resma 6-2, 6-7(2), 7-6(5), to clinch the victory. Earlier, the 23rd-ranked Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk bested Resma and Michelle Pits, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.
 
Poll Position
Cal is ranked 54th in this week's ITA Coaches Poll. In the ITA singles poll, Jessica Alsola – who has won nine straight matches to improve her record to 18-3 – is ranked 36th. The duo of Alsola and Katja Wiersholm (14-7) – which won in recent matches vs. Michigan and Colorado – is ranked No. 19 in doubles.
 
Scouting the Bears

• Cal – which went 8-1 in the conference in the 2021-22 season – is the defending Pac-12 regular-season champion
• The Bears won the Pac-12 Championship crown in the 2020-21 season
• Hannah Viller Moeller clinched Cal's first three victories this season, including the 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 21, the 4-1 win over Princeton in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 27and the 5-1 result over SDSU on Feb. 24
• Haley Giavara ended fall 2022 in France, where the Cal senior and Team USA won the Master'U BNP Paribas Championship, with Cal head coach Amanda Augustus on the U.S. staff
• Sophomores Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm were outstanding in the fall, as the duo won the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and reached the consolation doubles final at the ITA National Fall Championships
• Alsola, Wiersholm and Viller Moeller reached the singles quarterfinals at ITA regionals
• Also last fall, Alsola won the consolation singles title at the ITA All-American Championships, beating USD's Solymar Colling in the final, 6-2, 6-3
• Former two-time NCAA doubles champion Amanda Augustus – the 2021 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and five-time ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year (including in 2021-22) – is in her 16th year as head coach at her alma mater
• Associate head coach Zack Warren – the 2022 ITA Northwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, who has collected four regional awards overall – is in his ninth year on the staff
• Sean Hill is in his first year as Cal's volunteer assistant coach, after playing as a graduate student for the Cal men's tennis team in 2022

• The Rainbow Wahine play at UC Davis on Friday before heading to Berkeley
• In Hawaii's most recent matches, it suffered a 5-2 loss at No. 18 San Diego on Feb. 18, after winning, 5-2, at San Diego State on Feb. 16
• Ana Vilcek is ranked 116th in singles
• Vilcek was named the Big West Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after a 3-0 week that included wins over UC Riverside's Kamya Nair, 6-0, 6-0, SDSU's 116th-ranked Andjela Skrobonja, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (8), and USD's  37th-ranked Solymar Colling, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4)
• Jun Hernandez – a former assistant coach for the Cal women's and Cal men's tennis teams – is in his 16th season as head coach of Hawaii
