Bears’ Win Streak Ends At Nine Matches

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The No. 11 California beach volleyball team dropped its final match of the Queen's Cup against host and ninth-ranked Hawaii 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The loss ended a nine-match win streak for the Golden Bears.
 
The battle between the Bears (10-3) and Rainbow Wahine (12-3) – who both entered the final match of the weekend with unbeaten 4-0 records in the tournament and nine-match win streaks – came down to a court one finale.

The BeachBows got on the board first with a court four win, but the Bears were quick to respond evening the match up with a win on five. Juniors Brooke Buchner and Natalie Martin topped their opponents 21-15, 21-17 to make it all square. The two teams split the next two flights with UH winning on court three and Cal's court two captain duo of Ainsley Radell and Ashley Delgado earning a clutch 21-14, 21-18 win to bring the focus onto court one.
 
After dropping the first set 21-11, junior Maya Gessner and sophomore Ella Dreibholz extended the match with a 21-17 second frame victory. The pair went up 10-6 in the final set, but the 'Bows stormed back to win six of the next seven points and took a late lead that the Bears could not overcome. The final score ended at 15-13 in Hawai'i's favor.

Cal will now return home to the Clark Kerr Courts for its home opener – the Big Spike with Stanford and Saint Mary's. Both matches are scheduled for Saturday, March 18.
