Lauzon, DeSouza Earn Pac-12 Weekly Honors
Lauzon Wins Pac-12 Specialist Of The Week, DeSouza Takes Home Coaches Coach Award
BERKELEY – Mya Lauzon and
Nevaeh DeSouza of the No. 7 Cal women's gymnastics team earned a pair of Pac-12 weekly honors Tuesday afternoon after an historic weekend at Haas Pavilion. Lauzon picked up her second Pac-12 Specialist of the Week of the season and DeSouza won Coaches Choice.
Â
Lauzon was unstoppable in the Golden Bears' two quad meets, winning five of the six events that she competed in. The sophomore tied for first on vault on Friday and won beam and floor on both days. During the first meet she broke the program-beam record with a 9.975 and promptly followed that up by securing the first perfect 10 on that event on Sunday. Her efforts helped the team post the second-highest beam score in NCAA history at 49.825.
Â
DeSouza helped realize that record as well with a career-high 9.975 on beam, which at the time tied the program high. She then added a season-high 9.900 on floor on the next rotation to complete an incredible senior-day performance. While DeSouza had a strong weekend, this award is also an ode to the fantastic career she has had. She's been the face of consistency for the Bears, competing in the all-around in 45 of 46 career meets, and this season has hit on 44 of 44 routines.
Â
This is DeSouza's first Coaches Choice award and the sixth overall weekly honor of her career.
Â
The Bears broke the program-scoring record twice to win the meets, with a 198.100 on Friday and a 198.275 on Sunday.
