Heather Petri To Be Inducted Into ISHOF Hall Of Fame

Only Four-Time Female Olympian In Cal History

BERKELEY – The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) announced this week that it will be inducting four-time Olympian and current Cal women's water polo assistant coach Heather Petri as part of its prestigious Class of 2023.

Petri – a two-time All-American as a student-athlete from 1997-2001 – owns the distinction as the only four-time female Olympian in the history of Cal Athletics. She is one of the most decorated women's water polo players of all time, having won four Olympic medals and three golds at the Pan American Games.

In 2000, Petri competed for Team USA at the first-ever Olympic Games to offer water polo, taking home a silver medal before returning to Cal for her senior season. After winning Olympic bronze in 2004 and silver in 2008, she helped take home the first gold medal in the national team's history in 2012.

Petri's fourth Olympic medal came on the heels of a 2011 Pan American performance in which she scored four goals, making it 3-for-3 in first-place finishes at the tournament and clinching Team USA's berth at the 2012 London Olympics. She also scored in the gold medal win over Canada at the 2003 Pan Am's to help seal a spot in the 2004 Olympic Games.

Petri had her cap retired by the Cal women's water polo program in 2013, when she was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2018, she was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Petri was also named to the Pac-12 All-Century Team in 2016. She is currently in her seventh season as an assistant coach for her alma mater, which has advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in six of the past seven Non-COVID seasons.

The induction event for the ISHOF Class of 2023 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
