No. 3 Bears Suffer Second Straight Overtime Loss

Cal Falls To No. 9 Long Beach State, 8-7

HONOLULU – The No. 3 California women's water polo team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss for the second consecutive night Sunday, falling to No. 9 Long Beach State 8-7 at the University of Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.

Senior Shea Salvino led the Bears (15-6) with two goals, two steals and two field blocks while Cecily Turner had a goal, steal and field block. Goalie Isabel Williams had nine saves and two steals.

Cal trailed for most of the game and was behind 7-4 midway through the third quarter before Reagan Whitney and Salvino strung together consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 7-6 heading into the final period. The score remained that way until the Bears' Mallory Reynoso found the back of the cage with 1:50 left in regulation to tie the score at 7-7.

The Beach scored the only goal of either overtime session to secure the victory.

The Bears remain on the road next weekend when they travel to Stockton to meet No. 12 Pacific on Sunday at 1 p.m.
