Newfeld, Smith-Gordon Named Regular-Season All-Americans
CGA Debuts Regular-Season All-America Program
BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics has landed two entries on the inaugural College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Regular-Season All-America list, as announced on Tuesday. To qualify, athletes must have a four-score average on their respective event(s) that ranks within the top eight in the nation; for the Golden Bears, junior
Noah Newfeld (all-around) and sophomore
Jasper Smith-Gordon (vault) each achieved a coveted spot on that list heading into this weekend's MPSF Championships.
Newfeld, who acts as one of the Bears' team captains, was Cal's lone representative at the Winter Cup this season. He recorded four entries on Cal's modern top-10 list throughout the season – two on still rings and two on parallel bars. His season-high score of 79.800 in the all-around came at a Feb. 11 tri-meet hosted by Air Force.
Smith-Gordon, a sophomore who made his debut for the Bears this year, earned Co-Rookie and Co-Specialist of the Week honors from the CGA, as well as a Specialist of the Week award from the MPSF, following his program-record vault at Stanford on March 4. That score of 14.850 is one of his four Cal top-10 marks set in the event this season.
Newfeld and Smith-Gordon are both set to compete for the Bears at the MPSF Championships, scheduled this year for April 1 at the Air Force Academy.
