Burns Earns Bears’ Second Conference Award

Sophomore Pole Vaulter Named Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete Of The Week

SAN FRANCISCO – After posting the nation's second-best pole vault mark of the season last weekend, California track & field sophomore Tyler Burns has been named the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Burns leaped 5.55m (18-2.5) at the Aztec Invitational to beat out 25 other competitors in the men's pole vault and rise to No. 3 in program history, becoming the first Golden Bear sophomore in history to clear that height. He currently ranks second in the nation.

"Tyler has put a ton of work into his running mechanics and physical training to be able to move bigger poles better this year," said assistant coach Dan Lefever, who leads the pole vault squad. "We are thrilled at his progress, and know he has his sights set much higher."

This is Cal's second weekly Pac-12 honor this season; last week, it was senior Amari Turner who earned the women's version of the award.

Burns will compete this weekend at the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, scheduled this year from March 30-April 1.
