Smith-Gordon Named MPSF Specialist Of The Week
Sophomore Set Program Vault Record Last Weekend
SEATTLE – Following his record-breaking effort at Stanford last Saturday, Cal men's gymnastics sophomore
Jasper Smith-Gordon has been announced as this week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Specialist of the Week, as announced by the MPSF on Tuesday.
Smith-Gordon currently owns three of Cal's top 10 scores in the modern scoring system, including his most recent winning performance of 14.850 that surpassed a two-week-old program record set by teammate
Khalen Curry. The Woking, Surrey, native made his collegiate debut for the Golden Bears this season after injuries kept him sidelined for his entire freshman year.
"I'm really happy that Jasper has been able to overcome some early injuries and not only compete for Cal, but also perform exceptionally at meets," head coach J.T. Okada said. "He's already set the school record and left his stamp on our program, but I also know that he is capable of even more in the future. I'm proud to have him on our team, and I know that with time he will display even more of his true potential."
This is the third MPSF weekly award for the Bears this season, following senior
Noah Sano's Specialist of the Week nod (Jan. 17) and freshman
Theodor Gadderud's Freshman of the Week honor (Feb. 21).
Smith-Gordon and the Bears will be back in action this Saturday at 2 p.m. PT as they welcome Army and William & Mary to Haas Pavilion.
