Team USA Selects 4 Bears For World Cup Qualifiers
Two Current, Two Former Bears Chosen
BERKELEY – The 2023 Team USA World Aquatics World Cup Qualifier roster set for March 8-14 in Zagreb, Croatia, includes two current and two former members of the California men's water polo team, USA Water Polo Men's National Team head coach Dejan Udovicic announced on Monday.
Included in the 18-person squad are Cal junior goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg and sophomore center George Avakian – both key contributors on the Golden Bears' current back-to-back national championship teams – as well as four-time All-Americans Luca Cupido and Johnny Hooper.
Two-time All-America selection Weinberg is no stranger to the national stage, having played for USA Water Polo throughout his career. His most recent national team participation was on last summer's silver medal-winning team at the 2022 FINA World League Super Final. After leading the MPSF in saves this past fall, he closed out his junior season with the Bears by being named to the NCAA Championship First Team, having played a huge role in Cal's legendary comeback victory with 12 saves against USC in the national championship game.
Avakian, who scored a goal in the national championship win over the Trojans, continues to build his Team USA resume, which already includes appearances at the 2021 FINA Junior World Championship and on the USA Water Polo 18U Youth National Team and 15U Cadet Team, as well as a gold medal at the 2019 UANA Youth Pan American Championship.
Both Bears join forces with former Cal superstars Cupido and Hooper, both of whom were four-time All-Americans during their time with the program.
Cupido graduated in 2017 after a senior season that saw him earn the Peter J. Cutino Award for the collegiate water polo player of the year, ACWPC National Player of the Year and MPSF Player of the Year honors. He was a member of both the 2016 and 2020 Team USA Olympic teams, has competed at three world championships and won a gold medal in the Pan American Games Toronto in 2015.
Hooper ended his Cal career as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 245 goals, averaging an MPSF-leading 3.67 goals per game in 2018. He was also a part of Team USA's 2020 Olympics and 2017 and 2019 World Championship rosters alongside Cupido.
Thirteen of the 18 Team USA athletes will be eligible to play in each match, with the roster being determined prior to each game day. They open the tournament on Wednesday against host Croatia at 10 a.m. PT. They will also take on Japan, France, Hungary and Italy. Live streams and live stats will both be available.
