Cal’s Vault Record Holder Named Co-Rookie, Co-Specialist Of The Week

BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics sophomore Jasper Smith-Gordon has earned two more weekly awards to add to his résumé, as the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) announced on Wednesday that he earned both Co-Specialist and Co-Rookie of the Week honors for last week's record-breaking vault at Stanford.

Smith-Gordon, who was also named MPSF Specialist of the Week on Tuesday, posted a vault score of 14.850 last Saturday to set the modern program record and win the title over gymnasts from No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Illinois. His three awards this week bring Cal's season total up to five (Noah Sano, MPSF Specialist of the Week – Jan. 17; Theodor Gadderud, MPSF Freshman of the Week – Feb. 21).

Stanford's Asher Hong and Navy's Matthew Petros also took a share of the title for Rookie of the Week, while Michigan's Javier Alfonso and Army's Maddox Pabellon were additional winners for Specialist of the Week.

Smith-Gordon and the Bears return to Haas Pavilion for a meet with Army and William & Mary on Saturday at 2 p.m.
