SAN DIEGO – The California Golden Bears men's rowing team had a tremendous showing on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic, taking first place in every race Saturday morning and advancing each boat to the grand final stage Sunday.
 
The Varsity 8+ crew opened the day with a narrow one-second victory over Oxford Brookes with a finishing time of 5:50.279 in the preliminary round of the Copley Cup and will compete in the grand final stage at 10:02 a.m.
 
Cal's 2V8+ and 3V8+ both competed in separate heats of the Sharp Memorial Cup with the 2V8+ squad taking the first heat by over eight seconds with a time of 6:20.403 and the 3V8+ crew taking the second heat at 6:25.741. Both teams will race in the grand final at 10:37 a.m.
 
The Freshman 8+ had a dominant performance in the Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup, winning its heat by over 25 seconds with a finishing time of 6:19.430. The team will compete in the grand final at 11:33 a.m.
 
The 2V8+, 3V8+ and Freshman 8+ all raced in the Anderson Borthwick Memorial Trophy preliminary round and took the top three spots. The 2V8+ was first at 6:09.628 with the 3V8+ taking second at 6:16.243 and the Freshman 8+ finishing third at 6.18.333. All three teams will compete in the grand final at 12:18 p.m.
