SAN DIEGO – The No. 7 California Golden Bears women's rowing team had a successful first day at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning with all four boats finishing in the top two places of their respective races and earning a spot in Sunday's grand final stage.
 
The Varsity 8+ crew opened the day finishing in second place in its heat, just behind Stanford with a time of 6:41.284 and will compete in the grand final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup at 9:55 a.m.
 
The Varsity 4+ boat also finished second in its heat, coming in behind Texas with a time of 7:44.095 and earned a spot in the grand final stage of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup at 10:23 a.m.
 
Cal's second Varsity 8+ squad took second place behind Stanford in the first heat of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy with a finishing time of 6:51.886 and will race in the grand final stage at 10:30 a.m.
 
Rounding out the day's races was the third Varsity 8+ boat which took second place in the first heat of the Carley Copley Cup, just four seconds behind Texas with a finishing time of 6:58.797. The grand final stage will be held at 12:10 p.m.
