Turner Ties School Record As Bears Add To Program Lists

Big Day Ahead For Cal’s Best

WALNUT – California track & field put together a solid third day at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, entering the heart of its weekend of competition after senior Hakim McMorris' decathlon effort over the previous two days. In all, nearly 50 Golden Bears competed at Hilmer Lodge Stadium and recorded five new program top-10 marks throughout the day, including one that stands at the very top of its list.

Senior Amari Turner, who won the Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Week award on March 21, soared to new heights in the pole vault to make her case for another conference award this week; her mark of 4.30m (14-1.25) landed inside the NCAA's top 10 this year and tied the school record set by Lauren Martinez in 2018. Following that, freshman Carolina Visca made her collegiate debut in the women's javelin elite section with a throw of 46.53m/152-8 that instantly landed her at third in program history. Her fellow "elite" counterpart in junior Claire Yerby recorded her own entry on Cal's all-time lists, running the 1500m in 4:18.81 to rise all the way from ninth to sixth. At the long jump pit, senior Ijeoma Uche was improving her own No. 10 mark, leaping to a third-place 6.23m (20-5.25) for her best result in a Cal uniform. Freshman Georgia McCorkle rounded out the Bears' top finishes by placing third in the 5000m run, recording a time of 16:42.46.

One week after raising his pole vault PR to 5.53m (18-1.5), senior Skyler Magula bettered his career high yet again, clearing the bar at 5.55m (18-2.5) to tie teammate Tyler Burns' No. 3 all-time program mark and win Section A of the men's collegiate competition. Junior Jake Porter recorded Cal's next podium finish for the Bears' men, a second-place effort in the shot put that measured 17.68m (58-6.5), while sophomore David Foster finished third in the 100m finals at 10.52.

Cal will finish up its weekend tomorrow with entries in no fewer than seven "elite" sections – the women's 4x100m, women's high jump, women's hammer, men's 4x400m, men's pole vault, men's shot put and men's discus – in addition to its regular collegiate section entries. The Bears will begin at 9:00 a.m. PT with the women's collegiate hammer throw.
