Bears Add Three Program Top-10 Marks

WALNUT – California track & field closed out a long four days of milestone-filled competition with another impressive outing, as a number of the Golden Bears' stars posted significant marks at two meets on Saturday to follow yesterday's top performances. Just one day after Cal etched another school record into its history books (from Amari Turner in the women's pole vault), senior Kegan Schroeter finally delivered on what he had been threatening to do all season long, toppling Jari Matinolli's 37-year-old program hammer record with a tremendous winning throw of 70.21m (230-4) at the Mt. SAC Relays for the Bears' second all-time mark of the week.

Schroeter's achievement led a solid effort by all three of Cal's men in the event, with junior Ivar Moisander finishing fourth at 66.33m (217-7) and classmate Michael Gupta reaching a distance of 61.42m (201-6). Sophomore Tyler Burns, who is currently tied for third all-time at Cal, represented the Blue & Gold in the men's pole vault elite competition, reaching a height of 5.40m (17-8.5); at the same time, sophomore Mykolas Alekna and senior Iffy Joyner were competing in the elite men's discus contest, where Alekna posted the third-farthest throw in collegiate history (68.35m/224-3) to win the competition while Joyner finished seventh at 59.23m/194-4. Junior Jeff Duensing entered the men's shot put elite section, throwing for a mark of 18.06m/59-3, while the 4x400m elite relay squad of sophomore Isaiah Shaw, junior Josh Keller, sophomore Aiden Lippert and senior Henry Larkin were racing to a time of 3:06.54 on the track.

One week after taking the NCAA lead in the women's hammer throw, senior Anna Purchase continued her strong season with a toss of 69.97m (229-6) to finish second in the elite competition behind only Cal alumna Camryn Rogers, who rose to No. 7 all-time in the world with her meet-and-stadium-record throw of 77.84m (255-4). In the collegiate version of the contest, freshman Audrey Jacobs made the final and finished in sixth place with her mark of 60.76m (199-4). Meanwhile, sophomore Toby Lai rose to a tie for sixth in high jump program history, clearing the bar at 1.78m (5-10) in the women's elite competition. Following that, the relay squad of junior Jada Hicks, sophomore Jordyn Grady, senior Jazlynn Shearer and sophomore Aysha Shaheed entered the 4x100m elite contest, combining for a time of 45.11.

One athlete competed for the Bears in a separate locale, but his result was no less impactful. At the Bryan Clay Invitational in nearby Azusa, junior Garrett MacQuiddy ran the 1500m in 3:41.26, improving his own program No. 7 time and vaulting him into the nation's top 25.

Cal's incredible 2023 campaign will continue in two weeks with a return to Berkeley as they host the 127th Big Meet at Edwards Stadium on April 29.
