No. 6 Cal Loses Big Row To No. 2 Stanford
Cal 4V8+ Notches Sole Win Of The Dual
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The No. 6 California Golden Bears women's rowing team had some close races, but ultimately lost the annual Big Row dual to No. 2 Stanford at the Redwood Shores on Saturday morning. The Bears' sole win of the day was the fourth varsity eight.
Â
"Obviously we would want to win more than one race, but I think we saw a lot of improvement in some really significant areas from San Diego to now," Cal head coach
Al Acosta said. "It makes us feel really good about our foundation and where we can go from here. We answered a lot of questions from a couple weeks ago and overall, we're heading in the right direction."
Â
Cal's V8+ stayed within striking distance as it was bow to stern with Stanford at about the 1,000-meter mark, but the Cardinal were able to keep moving and crossed the finish line with about two to three seats of open water, finishing with a time of 6:21.00 to Cal's 6:30.47.
Â
The 2V8+ race was a tight competition the whole way through. Stanford was up ahead out of the blocks, but Cal was able to walk through them to get up about two seats halfway through the race. The Cardinal then made a push and took a few seats back and finished strong, beating the Bears by just about three seconds with a time of 6:29.15 to Cal's 6:32.31.
Â
The 3V8+ dual was another close one as both boats were just one to two seats apart for the majority of the race. At about the 1,000-meter mark, Stanford was able to push away and finish just three seconds ahead of Cal with a time of 6:35.24 to the Bears' 6:38.25.
Â
The 4V8+ ended up being the closest finish of the day. Cal was up bow to stern for a majority of the race, but Stanford started an early sprint where it was able to walk the Bears down seat by seat. Cal was able to retake the advantage when it started its sprint and finished ahead by about two seats in a time of 6:46.01 to Stanford's 6:38.12.
Â
In the V4+ race, Stanford took an early lead of about one to two seats of open water by the halfway mark and continued to grow the lead, finishing with a time of 7:13.45 to Cal's 7:22.11.
