Williams, Turner Lead Bears On All-MPSF Team
Cal Earns Six All-Conference Nods
BERKELEY – Six California women's water polo student-athletes were named to the various 2023 All-MPSF teams on Wednesday, led by first-team selections Isabel Williams and Cecily Turner.
Fellow seniors Ruby Swadling and Shea Salvino earned All-MPSF Honorable Mentions, as did junior Maryn Dempsey. Redshirt freshman attacker Claire Rowell made the MPSF All-Newcomer Team to round out the Golden Bear honorees.
Williams becomes the first Cal goalie to earn multiple All-MPSF First Team nods. She heads into this weekend's MPSF Championships as the conference's leader in saves (231), steals (46) and saves per game (9.24). She is currently 14 saves away from matching her single-season career high and taking the No. 5 spot for career saves in Cal history.
Turner, who was recently named to the Cutino Award Watch List alongside Williams, gets her first All-MPSF selection. The Horsham, England native has helped power the Bears' offense all year long, leading the way with seven hat tricks and tying for first on the team and ninth in the conference with 41 goals. Her 24 assists and 65 total goal contributions both rank second on the team, while her 12 field blocks are good for third in the conference.
Swadling and Dempsey both take home their second career All-MPSF selections. Swadling has been one of the team's most consistent players on both ends of the pool over the last two months, a stretch which includes four hat tricks, a six-goal outburst against No. 1 USC and a season-best four-assist game in a win over No. 16 Arizona State. She is tied with Turner for the team-lead in goals (41), leads the Bears with 30 assists, and ranks top-10 in the MPSF in both earned exclusions (25) and steals (26).Â
Dempsey has been crucial to Cal's attack, recently becoming the third Bear to go over 30 goals on the season. She enters the postseason with a goal in six straight games. Her totals of 56 points and 23 assists are good for third and fourth on the team, respectively.
Salvino started the year strong by being named the MPSF Player of the Week following Cal's first weekend of competition, scoring seven goals in three wins over top-10 teams at the Bulldog Fest in Fresno. With a goal and an assist in Cal's regular season finale against No. 2 Stanford, she became the fourth Bear to go over 50 total points for the season, currently with 51.
Rowell came on strong midway through the season, highlighted by a four-goal explosion to lead the Bears over No. 15 Indiana, 9-7, on March 18. That performance earned her MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors. She has 10 goals, 20 assists and 10 steals on the season.
Only No. 1 USC (3) had more first-team selections than Cal. The Bears take the No. 4 seed into the first round of the 2023 MPSF Championships on Friday to face No. 15 Indiana at 2:30 p.m. at San Jose State's SRAC Pool.
