Bears Set New Program Record With 15 All-Academic Honorees

Third Straight Year With At Least 14 Selections

BERKELEY – For the third straight year, the California women's water polo team placed a record number of student-athletes on the MPSF All-Academic Team. An all-time program-high 15 Golden Bears earned a spot on the 2023 team, the conference announced Tuesday.

Of the seven MPSF schools, Cal and Stanford tied for the most total selections, accounting for 30 of the 78 total honorees.

Earning the third conference All-Academic selections of their careers were All-MPSF picks Isabel Williams, Cecily Turner, Shea Salvino and Ruby Swadling. Williams and Turner were both named to the CSC At-Large Academic All-District Team on Tuesday as well.

Juniors Mallory Reynoso, Maryn Dempsey, Reagan Whitney and Maddie DeMattia each earned their second career honor.

Making the team for the first time were seniors Sydney Hammill and Helena Batey, junior Mara Loughlin, sophomores Rozanne Voorvelt and Jessie Rose and redshirt freshmen Claire Rowell and Janna Tauscher.

The Bears' record-setting 2023 squad was also recently recognized for having the most improved team GPA of any Cal athletics program this school year. Leading the team in GPA once again was Hammill, who took home the Golden Bear Award for the third straight year.

To be eligible for recognition on the MPSF All-Academic Team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, be a sophomore academically and play in at least 50 percent of her team's games.

The Bears finished the season with a 19-10 record after taking the No. 3 seed into their ninth-ever NCAA Championship appearance.
