Bears Earn All-Pac-12 Honors
BERKELEY – On the eve of the NCAA Championship, California women's tennis earned five spots on the All-Pac-12 teams – with
Haley Giavara and
Jessica Alsola leading the way with first-team selections – the conference announced on Thursday. The Pac-12 named
Katja Wiersholm to its second team, and
Hannah Viller Moeller and
Berta Passola Folch claimed honorable mention.
Â
This marks the third All-Pac-12 honor for Giavara and Viller Moeller, who also collected conference kudos in 2021 and 2022. Sophomores Alsola and Wiersholm garnered All-Pac-12 recognition for the second straight year, while Passola Folch earned the honor in her first season.
Â
Giavara, a senior, has picked up a major honor for the second straight week. Last Thursday, the two-time All-American – who is double majoring in legal studies and sociology – was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The San Diego native has been an important member of the Cal squad since her freshman season of 2019-20, when she was named the ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year and earned her first singles All-America honor. Giavara ended each of her three previous seasons ranked in the top 40 in singles, as she was 15th in 2020, 27th in 2021 – when she helped the Bears win their first Pac-12 tournament championship – and 36th in 2022, when she led Cal to the Pac-12 regular-season title.
Â
Alsola was named to the NCAA Singles Championship field earlier this week, with the individual tournament slated for May 22-27 in Orlando, Florida. The Fresno product, who will compete in the tournament for the second time, has a 29-4 record – which includes a 19-1 dual-match record and a 9-1 Pac-12 mark – and leads the Bears in singles wins. She has had a strong second season and posted a career-best 18-match winning streak in singles that was snapped in the regular-season finale. Alsola had an excellent fall, when she won the consolation singles crown in the ITA All-American Championships. She was named to the All-Pac-12 second team as a freshman in 2022, when she was a key member of Cal's regular-season conference title team.
Â
Wiersholm will partner with Alsola to play in the NCAA Doubles Championship for the first time, with the doubles tournament also set for Orlando. The young Bears had a strong fall, when they won the doubles title in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and reached the consolation final at the ITA National Fall Championships. Ranked as high as fourth in the ITA doubles poll, the duo – which is currently ranked 12th – bring a 16-12 record into the postseason. Wiersholm, who hails from Kirkland, Washington, has an 18-9 singles record, including a 14-6 mark on court three. She has also posted three clinching wins for the Bears this year. Wiersholm earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season.
Â
A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, and another All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2022, Viller Moeller has a 23-11 singles record to rank second on the team in singles wins. She leads the Bears with four clinching wins, with the Dane clinching Cal's first three victories: a 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 21, a 4-1 win over Princeton in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 27 and a 5-1 result over SDSU on Feb. 24. Viller Moeller secured another Cal victory on March 31, when the Bears beat Arizona State, 6-1.
Â
Another international member of the Cal program, Passola Folch has a 14-6 singles record in one semester as a collegian, including an impressive 8-2 mark in Pac-12 play. The Barcelona, Spain, native earned the first clinching win of her career on March 5 at Colorado, when she defeated Betina Tokac, 6-4, 6-0, to give the Bears a 4-3 victory. Passola Folch has quickly made an impact in doubles as well, posting a 3-0 record when paired with
Erin Richardson.
Â
The 28th-ranked Bears open the NCAA Championship on Friday at 11 a.m. CDT/9 a.m. PDT, when they take on 34th-ranked San Diego in the first round in Austin, Texas.
