5 Women Earn Academic All-America Track & Field Honors
Hammer Standout Anna Purchase Named To First Team
After a round of voting by members of College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), all five of California track & field's female Academic All-District recipients have earned Academic All-America honors, as announced by the CSC on Wednesday. This marks the first time in each of their careers that any member of these quintet has reached CSC Academic All-America status.
Anna Purchase represents the Golden Bears on the Academic All-America First Team, following a standout athletic and academic graduate senior campaign in which she placed third in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and posted the nation's second-best mark of 73.02m (239-7), bringing her to No. 6 in collegiate history and second in the Cal record books to close out her collegiate career. She also owns the eighth-best weight throw in program history.
The Bears' second-team representatives,
Ijeoma Uche and
Rebecca Tomann, also ended their Cal careers with entries on the program all-time lists (Uche – 6th outdoor long jump, tied-10th indoor long jump; Tomann – 6th weight throw). Uche also earned her first career trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships this year with a qualifying performance at the West Preliminary after posting a personal-best long jump of 6.31m (20-8.5) at the Pac-12 Championships, while Tomann contributed to a hammer throw squad that ranked fourth in the nation.
Kylie Hilton and
Kalinda Reynolds round out Cal's group of five with third-team appearances. Hilton, a graduate transfer, currently ranks seventh on Cal's outdoor pole vault list and eighth on its indoor list; in her final collegiate season, she qualified for a regional preliminary for the first time in her career and contributed to the Bears' No. 8 pole vault group. Reynolds graduated with two degrees while racing in both the track and cross country seasons, earning a spot at the 2022 West Region Cross Country Championships.
The men's Academic All-America teams will be announced Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT.
