Three Bears To Represent USA At World Aquatics Championships
Cal Trio Competes For Third Time In 2023
BERKELEY – After winning bronze at the World Aquatics Men's Water Polo World Cup earlier this month, three California Golden Bears will look to continue making an impact for Team USA at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, which begin Saturday in Fukuoka, Japan.
Making up the trio of Bears are Cal's current starting goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg and alums Johnny Hooper and Luca Cupido. This will be their third tournament competing alongside one another for USA Water Polo so far this calendar year under head coach Dejan Udovicic.
Weinberg – a three-time ACWPC All-American and back-to-back NCAA champion – was Team USA's top choice at goalkeeper at the World Cup, which took place from June 30 to July 2 in Los Angeles. He averaged nine saves per game in three starts, including a 15-save outburst and fourth-quarter shutout in a come-from-behind victory over Serbia.
Teammates on Cal's 2016 national championship team, Hooper and Cupido have continued to be key contributors for USA Water Polo. Hooper – the Bears' second all-time leading scorer – began the World Cup with a brace in the quarterfinals, scoring his second goal in the fourth quarter against Serbia.
In the thrilling bronze medal win on July 2, Hooper and 2017 Peter J. Cutino Award winner Cupido put away two goals apiece to help put Team USA over Hungary 14-13. It was the USA's first medal at the World Cup since claiming gold in 1997.
Team USA opens the 2023 World Aquatics Men's Water Polo Championships in Group A against Kazakhstan on Sunday at 5 p.m. PT. Live streaming for the World Championships is available for NBC Peacock subscribers.
