Cal Alumnus Wins Fourth Consecutive Medal In The Event At World Championships

FUKUOKA, Japan– California men's swimming & diving alumnus Ryan Murphy captured his third medal of the 2023 World Aquatics Championships on Friday morning, taking silver in the 200-meter backstroke.
 
The two-time Olympian earned his fourth consecutive medal in the evening, finishing with a time of 1:54.83 – just behind gold medal winner Hubert Kos of Hungary who finished with a time of 1:54.14. Murphy also medaled in this event in 2022, '19 and '17. It is his third medal of the 2023 World Championships, winning gold in the 100-meter backstroke and bronze in the mixed 4x100 medley relay. It is his 15th career medal in the World Championships. 
 
Fellow alumnus Hugo Gonzalez finished seventh in the same event; he finished with a time of 1:56.33. It is the third finals appearance of the 2023 World Championships for Gonzalez.
 
In the semifinals, Cal had two current athletes set personal bests in their respective events.
 
Dare Rose swam a blistering time of 50.53 in the 100 butterfly, a new personal best. He also reached the final in the 50 fly. He will compete for a medal on Friday morning at 4:42 a.m. PT.
 
In the 50 freestyle, Jack Alexy won his heat in the semifinals and finished second overall with a personal-best time of 21.60. On Thursday Alexy won silver in the 100 free. He will compete for his third medal of the World Championships on Friday morning at 4:09 a.m. PT.
