Lynn Joustra Wins Gold, Punches Ticket To 2024 Olympics

Alumna Becomes 5th Bear To Win World Championship

FUKUOKA, Japan – Kitty Lynn Joustra is headed to the Olympics for the second time.

The former California women's water polo star scored for Team Netherlands in each of the last four games of the World Aquatics Championships, including in Wednesday's 9-8 semifinal win over Italy that secured her team a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

On Friday, Lynn Joustra became the fifth Golden Bear to win World Championships gold, putting away her 10th goal of the competition in a 17-16 championship win over Spain. She is the first Bear to win the tournament since Roser Tarrago (2013, Spain).

A three-time All-American at Cal (2018-21) and member of the Netherlands' 2020 Tokyo Olympics team, Lynn Joustra was a consistent contributor throughout the Netherlands' run to its first world championship in 32 years. She scored 10 goals over the final four contests – all wins – including five in a blowout against Israel and three more in the following 17-10 win over Canada.

The quarterfinal matchup pitted Lynn Joustra against a pair of fellow Bear alumnae in Emma Wright and Kindred Paul, who helped carry Canada to a seventh-place finish. Wright finished the tournament with 10 goals of her own, while Paul added seven.

The Bears' current roster was also represented by 2023 ACWPC All-American Ruby Swadling, who took fourth place with Team Australia. Swadling received playing time in multiple games, first seeing the pool in Australia's 9-5 defeat to Team USA on July 18. She scored her first goal for Australia in a 16-7 win over Israel three days later.
