Cal Honors 100 Years Of California Memorial Stadium

Upcoming Football Season To Feature Promotions, Giveaways And More

BERKELEY – In addition to great plays and memorable moments, the 2023 Cal football season will be special for another reason – the 100th anniversary of California Memorial Stadium.

CMS first opened its doors on Nov. 24, 1923, when the Golden Bears hosted Stanford in the Big Game. Cal defeated the Cardinal 9-0 in front of a raucous crowd of 73,000, and the century to follow has yielded its share of unforgettable occasions, both on and off the football field.

Cal Athletics will spend the upcoming football season honoring the past century with promotions, giveaways, fan engagement and more. Today marks the launch of our "CMS 100" homepage on CalBears.com – a source for stories, memories, information and more. You can also share your favorite story or greatest memory of California Memorial Stadium here.

There are several promotions planned to recognize the anniversary during Cal home football games this season:

·       Sept. 9 vs. Auburn: We kick off the season-long celebration with a Gold Out, plus a halftime drone show

·       Sept. 16 vs. Idaho: The first 2,000 fans can pick up a commemorative coin or pin at the marketing table after entering the stadium

·       Oct. 7 vs. Oregon State: In addition to it being Homecoming, the first 10,000 fans entering the stadium will receive a commemorative field rally towel

·       Nov. 11 vs Washington State: We wrap up the home schedule with a stadium replica for the first 10,000 fans.

California Memorial Stadium is not short on memories. There was "Pappy's Boys," the players who competed under legendary coach Pappy Waldorf and led Cal to three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances from 1948-50. The iconic victory cannon has been providing the punctuation to Cal touchdowns and victories since 1964. CMS has showcased some of the best talent college football has to offer – Aaron Rodgers, Chuck Muncie, Marshawn Lynch, Jared Goff and so many more.

There have also been plenty of non-football memories made at California Memorial Stadium. Cal's baseball team played its home games there in 1925 and CMS has hosted professional sporting events over the years, such as Oakland Raiders home games during the 1970s and an international soccer contest between Inter Milan and Real Madrid in 2014. Cal's lacrosse team has called California Memorial Stadium home since the program's inception in 1999.

CMS has also hosted several dignitaries over the years, including U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman in 1948 and John F. Kennedy in 1962. The stadium is also the home to UC Berkeley's annual commencement exercises every spring.

Built on the Hayward Fault, California Memorial Stadium underwent a 21-month renovation project that began in 2010 that included seismic upgrades to continue ensuring the safety of all that visit.
