Rogers, Purchase Headed To World Final
Both Of Cal’s Hammer Throwers Will Compete Thursday
BUDAPEST, Hungary – California track & field's throwers continued their string of successes at the World Athletics Championships this week as alumnae
Camryn Rogers and
Anna Purchase both qualified for Thursday's hammer throw final. This year already marked the first time that two Golden Bears appeared in the same event at a single World Championships – now, the pair will do one better as they prepare to compete for medals in a field of 12 elite athletes.
Rogers, who competed in group A of the qualifying rounds, started off with a toss of 70.97m (232-10) before earning the auto-Q with a mark of 73.95m (242-7) on her second throw. She will enter tomorrow's contest as a favorite to win gold after reigning world champion Brooke Andersen failed to qualify for the final.
Making her debut on the world stage, Purchase launched her first throw 70.99m (232-11) to put herself firmly into finals contention. Following that, she posted the third-longest mark of her young career at 71.31m (233-11) in round two.
At last year's championships in Eugene, Oregon, Rogers earned silver to tie for the highest-ever finish by a Cal athlete – she or former teammate Purchase could break new ground Thursday by claiming a world title.
