BERKELEY – Six home games at Haas Pavilion and marquee matchups in San Juan Capistrano, Indianapolis and San Antonio highlight the 2023-24 nonconference schedule for first-year head coach Mark Madsen and his California men's basketball program, which was unveiled Wednesday.
 
The Golden Bears will officially tip off the Madsen era on Nov. 6 against St. Thomas (Minn.) in the first of four home games to be played during the initial 11 days of the season. Cal will also welcome Pacific (Nov. 10), CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 13) and Montana State (Nov. 16) to Berkeley during that span. The season opener on Nov. 6 is part of a basketball doubleheader in Haas; the Cal women's team will start its season against CSU Bakersfield the same day.
 
Cal will spend Thanksgiving week in Southern California with two games against Bradley, UTEP or Tulane at the SoCal Challenge on Nov. 20 and 22, followed by a clash with San Diego State in the inaugural SoCal Showcase on Nov. 25. All three neutral-site games will be played at The Pavilion in San Juan Capistrano.
 
Home games against Santa Clara (Dec. 2) and UC San Diego (Dec. 20) will bookend a four-game stretch in December that features contests against power-conference foes Butler (Dec. 9) and Ole Miss (Dec. 16). The Butler contest – the backend of a home-and-home series that started last season – is Cal's lone nonconference true road game, and will be played at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Cal and Ole Miss will meet at the AT&T Center in San Antonio as part of the 2023 Hall of Fame Series.
 
Cal has not faced St. Thomas or possible SoCal Challenge foes Bradley and UTEP previously.
 
Cal's full Pac-12 slate as well as tipoff times and television/streaming designations for all 11 nonconference contests will be announced at later dates.
