BREMERTON, Wash. – The California men's golf team surged up the leaderboard into a tie for second place before play was suspended due to darkness toward the end of the second round of the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club on Monday.

After finishing the opening 18 holes in fifth place with a 1-under-par 287, Cal's lineup tallied 11 front-nine birdies to being the second round and ended play at a field-best 8-under with all five Golden Bears through at least 14 holes played. Three Bears – Ethan Fang, Sampson Zheng and Nathan Wang – will finish the second round Tuesday morning before the third and final round begins at Gold Mountain's Olympic Course.

Host Washington (-21) shot a first-round 270 and owns a dominant advantage over the field, while Cal (-9), Oregon and Oregon State are tied for second place. Cal was one of three squads that was unable to finish the second round, along with Nevada and Seattle U.

Just two weeks after capturing co-medalist honors in his collegiate debut at the Marquette Intercollegiate, freshman Eric Lee is once again in position for an individual title. The rookie shot a collegiate-low 67 in the second round to jump 15 spots into a tie for second place with just two strokes of separation between him and clubhouse leader Taehoon Song (-8) of Washington. Lee was masterful across the second 18 holes played with birdies on holes 1, 7, 9, 11 and 14 on the way to a bogey-less round.

Fellow freshman Ethan Fang (-3) – who will play the final three holes of round two Tuesday – is also among the top eight entering the final day.

Many other Bears were in action at Gold Mountain, including six who played in the Husky Individual on the Cascade Course. Aaron Du and Charlie Berridge both fired 67s in the first and second rounds, respectively, while all six Bears finished the first 36 holes among the top 28. Du (-6) is tied for sixth and five shots off the lead while Berridge and Papon Sawatyanon are tied for 14th at 2-under.
