TULSA, Okla./DAVIS – Members of the California men's tennis team found success in two tournaments Saturday, with Alex Chang and Jonathan Irwanto staying alive in the pre-qualifying singles tournament at the ITA All-American Championships and with Alex Aney and John Kim continuing to forge their ways through the Aggie Invitational.
 
At the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Chang defeated Louisiana's Oriol Fillat Gimenez, 7-6(3), 7-6(3), and Wake Forest's Jamieson Nathan, 6-4, 6-4, to reach Sunday's round of 64. Irwanto beat Juan Zabala of Memphis, 6-1, 7-6(2), and Wake Forest's Dylan Chang, 6-1, 7-6(3), to join Alex Chang in the next round Sunday morning. The Bears are vying to win their way into the All-American qualifying tournament, which runs Monday and Tuesday, and eventually reach the main draw, slated for Oct. 4-8. Cal's Derrick Chen and Tim Stepanov also competed in Tulsa but were ousted from the main draw.
 
In the flight A singles quarterfinals in the Aggie Invite at UC Davis, Kim bested Diego Jarry of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 7-6(3), to reach Sunday's semifinals. Aney, in flight B, toppled another Gael, Paulo Hugo Etchecoin, 6-3, 6-0, to likewise move on to the Sunday semis.
 
The Aggie Invite will end on Sunday.
