Bears In Striking Position At Marquette Intercollegiate
Cal Jumps To Second Place, Eric Lee Tied For Individual Lead After 36 Holes
HARTFORD, Wisc. – The California men's golf team moved up two spots into second place and freshman
Eric Lee nabbed a three-way share of the individual lead in the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Monday.
Cal (+10) will enter the third and final round on Tuesday just three shots behind leader Purdue (+7) and one stroke ahead of Augusta (+11) following a second-round 4-over-par 292. All five golfers in the Golden Bear lineup are among the top 30 individually after 36 holes played while four of the five shot 2-over or better – including an even-par 72 by
Tony Chen, who is tied for 12th overall – during the second round. Four of the six Bears competing shot lower 18-hole scores on Monday compared to Sunday's opening round.
While the Bears will vie for a team title on Tuesday, Lee – playing as an individual – and senior
Sampson Zheng are in strong contention for the individual crown. Lee, who shot a 1-under 71 in his collegiate debut on Sunday, followed the performance with a 2-under 70 in round two that was highlighted by a scorching start of three straight birdies on holes 1-3. Lee (-3) is tied for the individual lead with a pair of Boilermakers – Nels Surtani and Luke Prall, the latter of which is also playing as an individual – heading into Tuesday's round while Zheng (-1) is just two shots behind following a 36-hole start of 70-73 (143).
