Frazier Earns 10 On Beam, Golden Bears Break Vault Record

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Sophomore eMjae Frazier earned a perfect 10 and the No. 6 California women's gymnastics team broke the program vault record in a historic win at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad Saturday night.

In just the second meet of the season the Golden Bears are already up to their old tricks, rewriting the record book with a handful of stellar team and individual performances. Cal (5-1) took first place in the session with the seventh-best team score in program history of 197.875. No. 14 Michigan State (3-3) placed second with a 196.725 followed by BYU (1-5) in third at 196.100 and NC State (0-4) in fourth with a 195.675.

Frazier became just the second Bear to earn a 10 on the balance beam following teammate Mya Lauzon who accomplished the feat late last season. The sophomore is now the only gymnast in Cal history to have a perfect score on two different events having recorded a flawless floor routine in 2023. Frazier also broke the program's all-around record that she set last year with a 39.775 tonight.

Lauzon had an incredible night as well receiving a 9.975 on both vault and floor. The junior finished second in the all-around behind Frazier with a score of 39.750 that matched her teammate's old record. Junior Maddie Williams gave the Bears a clean sweep of the all-around podium coming in third with a 39.325.

The Golden Bears took on the apparatus in Olympic order and started the night off by breaking the nine-year-old program vault record with a team score of 49.525. Lauzon won the event receiving a 10 from one of the two judges and tying her career-high with a 9.975. Freshman Kyen Mayhew made her collegiate debut taking second with a 9.95.

Next was the uneven bars where the Bears notched a 49.500 and earned five of the top six scores. They were led by Frazier and Williams who each scored a 9.925 to share the event title. Senior Gabby Perea came in fourth with a 9.900 and has now posted a 9.900 or better back-to-back weeks. Lauzon and junior Ella Cesario tallied a 9.875 to finish tied for fifth.

After a shaky start on the balance beam last week, Cal answered with a solid 49.300 in the third rotation tonight to stay in front of the pack. Frazier and Lauzon finished first and second, respectively, with Lauzon earning a 9.925. Senior Andi Li and Perea bookended the rotation with identical scores of 9.825 to finish tied for sixth, but the highlight of the night was Frazier's immaculate effort.

The Bears found their highest score of the night in the final rotation – the floor exercise. With all five counting scores clocking in at 9.850 or better, Cal notched a 49.550 and fell just short of the elusive 198 team score. Junior Jordan Kane kicked off the event with a career-high 9.875, followed by Williams who notched the first 9.900 of the rotation. Lauzon once again earned a 10 from one judge as she tied her career-high of 9.975 and Frazier anchored the lineup with a 9.95 to end the evening.

Cal will now look to keep this momentum going as it opens Pac-12 competition on the road at Washington on Saturday.
