Newfeld Dazzles, Bears Move Forward At Stanford Open
Senior Captain Takes Bronze With Personal-Best All-Around Score
STANFORD – California men's gymnastics posted an 8.1-point improvement on its season-opening score as the Golden Bears clashed with Stanford once again on Saturday night, this time at the Cardinal's Stanford Open at Burnham Pavilion; at the end of the meet, Cal had finished with a team score of 396.300 to Stanford's 415.250. The meet also featured members of Team USA as well as multiple junior gymnasts hoping to clinch a spot in the upcoming USA Gymnastics Winter Cup.
Senior
Noah Newfeld was Cal's top all-around finisher with a personal-best total of 81.400, good for third place overall behind Stanford's Asher Hong (84.950) and Khoi Young (84.850). His standout performance included squad-leading scores on parallel bars (14.300), pommel horse (13.800) and floor (13.450), the second of which matched his all-time best and contributed to a team event score of 64.350 for the eighth-best total in modern program history.
Cal was led on rings by sophomore
Theodor Roald Gadderud, who improved his collegiate personal best by over a point to take third place with a score of 13.850. The Norwegian National Team member competed in five events for the second straight meet, also posting solid scores on vault (14.100) and parallel bars (13.850).
The Bears' highest total event score of the night (69.850) came on vault, led by senior
Jelani Sweet's 14.400, but it was their parallel bars score of 67.900 that earned a second entry into the program top-10 lists, coming in at a tie for No. 5 and marking the team's best in two years. Newfeld's routine, completed with a stick, tied for the sixth-best score in modern Cal history and was the highlight of a group that posted four scores over 13.500. Capping the night off on a high note, senior
Darren Wong earned Cal's first event crown of the young season, a 13.550 on horizontal bar, that also marked his first routine on the apparatus since 2020.
