Golden Bear Teams Recognized With Newmark Awards
Honors Given To Cal Teams With Highest Cumulative GPAs During Previous Academic Year
BERKELEY – Several California programs were honored Wednesday with the announcement of the 2024 Newmark Awards, given annually to the teams at Cal with the top cumulative grade-point average during the previous academic year.
The Newmark Awards were established in 2007 by Pat and Kent Newmark to honor team academic achievements at Cal and come with a $7,000 stipend that goes into each winning program's operating budget. Kent Newmark, who passed away in March, competed on the tennis and track & field teams at Cal before graduating in 1960.
Men's rowing won the Men's Large Team award (25+ roster) for the seventh consecutive year with a cumulative GPA of 3.441 while women's swimming & diving took the Women's Large Team honor for the second straight year (3.503). Women's tennis (3.686) – which had the top cumulative GPA among all of Cal's teams - and men's golf (3.498) took the accolades in the small team categories. Cal's men's golf program also won the Most Improved GPA Award
