Story Links

BERKELEY – The California men's golf team will conclude its 2024 fall schedule in Carmel at the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate – formerly known as the Cal Poly Invitational – where it is the reigning tournament champion. The two-day tournament starts Monday with 36 holes of continuous play, followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday.

The Golden Bears have three top-four finishes in as many tournaments played this fall, mostly recently including a third-place effort at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton on Oct. 14-16.

Freshman Ziqin (Eric) Zhou has the top spot in Cal's lineup after placing 22nd in his collegiate stroke-play debut at the Pacific Invitational. Daniel Heo, Charlie Berridge, Kuangyu (Tony) Chen – the reigning Preserve Golf Club Collegiate individual medalist – and Matthew Miyamoto join Zhou in the five-man lineup.

BACK-TO-BACK?
The Golden Bears shot 23-under-par over the final 36 holes to rally back and win the 2023 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate – then known as the Cal Poly Invitational – on Oct. 31, 2023. Redshirt junior Tony Chen was the catalyst for the victory, claiming individual medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career with a 10-under-par 206. Cal (290-277-276—843) finished at 21-under-par, besting UCLA, Northwestern, Oregon and Duke, among others.

Senior Charlie Berridge – ranked third in the lineup this year – contributed to the 2023 victory with a tie for 21st (-3). Junior Daniel Heo, playing in the No. 2 spot this week, tied for 13th (-5) a year ago as an individual.

TOP BEAR
Daniel Heo has been Cal's most consistent golfer throughout the fall campaign, finishing sixth, fourth and 16th individually at The Tindall (Sept. 23-24), the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7-8) and the Pacific Invitational (Oct. 14-16), respectively, along with a 2UP win in his Big Match competition against Stanford. Heo, a junior from Cypress, has shot under par in eight of nine stroke-play rounds so far this season, and set personal collegiate bests of 16-under-par and a 54-hole score of 197 at the MacKenzie in early October

THE KIDS CAN PLAY
Freshmen Ziqin (Eric) Zhou and Matthew Miyamoto will return to the Cal lineup this week, a reoccurring theme this fall. Miyamoto has earned a spot in the lineup in all four stroke-play tournaments this fall, having averaged 71.00 strokes per round. Zhou is back in the lineup for the second straight tournament since returning stateside from Japan, where he finished as runner-up at the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Gotemba (69-67-65-68—269).

LEADING THE CHARGE
The Bears have proven to be stiff competition in the early stages of their first season under Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Michael Wilson, who was hired to the position on July 22. Wilson, a 2007 alumnus and key member of Cal's 2004 NCAA Men's Golf Championship team, returned to Berkeley most recently following two successful seasons at the helm of Colorado State's program (2022-24), having led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and a 2023 NCAA Championship berth. He's in his eighth season as a Division I head coach.

SPRING ON THE HORIZION
The Bears will step away from team competition during the months of November and December before opening their 2025 spring schedule at the Southwestern Invitational on Jan. 27-29 in Thousand Oaks. Cal will play six tournaments in the spring – spanning the states of Arizona, California and Hawaii, along with a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – before heading to Bowling Green, Kentucky for its inaugural ACC Championship in late April.
