Cal To Host Alister MacKenzie Invitational
Golden Bears Are Two-Time Reigning Tournament Champions
BERKELEY – The California men's golf team will host the 20th annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club in Fairfax on Monday and Tuesday. Cal is the two-time reigning tournament champion, having ran away with both the 2022 and 2023 team titles. The Golden Bears have won or shared the team title at the MacKenzie 13 times in its 19-year history dating back to 2002.
Seven Bears will play in the two-day, 54-hole tournament, which gets started Monday with 36 holes of continuous play starting at 8 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Tuesday's third-round pairings will be determined by results from the first two rounds of play.
Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
Graduate transfer
Wenliang Xie will play as the Bears' top seed at the MacKenzie after tying for 28th with an even-par 218 in The Tindall, Cal's season-opening tournament. He'll be joined by freshman
Matthew Miyamoto and senior
Charlie Berridge – both of whom played in The Tindall – as well as
Sihao Cong and
Papon Sawatyanon, who will make their stroke-play season debuts. Cong, who missed his entire freshman year with an injury, made his Cal debut at the annual Big Match on Sept. 26.
Daniel Heo – who tied for sixth individually with a personal collegiate-low 54-hole score of 206 at The Tindall – and freshman
Kai Hirayama will play as individuals. It will be Hirayama's Cal debut.
Cal earned a fourth-place finish at The Tindall on Sept. 23-24, shooting 13-under-par 839. The Bears were then narrowly edged by rival Stanford, 4-3, in the annual Big Match two days later at Menlo Country Club.

LEADING THE CHARGE
The Bears are playing their first season under Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Michael Wilson, who was hired to the position on July 22. Wilson, a 2007 alumnus and key member of Cal's 2004 NCAA Men's Golf Championship team, returned to Berkeley most recently following two successful seasons at the helm of Colorado State's program (2022-24), having led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and a 2023 NCAA Championship berth. He's in his eighth season as a Division I head coach.
GLANCE BACK AT THE TINDALL
Heo and Berridge rounded out a pair of collegiate-low 54-hole scores as Cal took fourth place at The Tindall, shooting 275-278-286—839 (-13). Cal entered the second and final day of the Tindall in second place at 15-under-par and just five shots behind eventual champion Utah, but the Utes ran away with the tournament victory, shooting a 271 on Sept. 24 to finish at 33-under-par. Cal's first 36 holes of The Tindall – and the season – were impressive, as Berridge and Xie carded an ace apiece and Heo totaled 10 birdies for a second-round score of 63, a collegiate best.
NEW ERA TEED UP FOR CAL GOLF
A transformational gift in support of Cal Golf is setting a new course for the sport and providing a model for philanthropic engagement at a pivotal moment for Cal Athletics. FALL SEASON UNDERWAY
Two fall tournaments remain on the Bears' schedule following the MacKenzie. Cal will play at the Pacific Invitational on Oct. 14-16 and the Cal Poly Invitational on Oct. 28-30.
