Cal Earns A-Cut and 8th Fastest Time In 800 Freestyle

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4 California men's swimming & diving team opened the first day of the Minnesota Invitational with wins after both relay teams earned first-place finishes. At the same time, the 800-yard freestyle relay team recorded an A-cut time to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Championships on Wednesday.
 
In the first event of the evening, the 200-yard medley relay, the Golden Bears' A lineup of graduate student Björn Seeliger, freshman Yamato Okadome, sophomore Roman Jones and freshman Lucca Battaglini earned first-place honors with a time of 1:24.03.
 
In the final event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay, Cal's A lineup of sophomore Keaton Jones, senior Gabriel Jett, freshman Nans Mazellier and senior Trent Frandson earned a first-place finish in a time of 6:14.39, which is an A-Cut time and is the eighth fastest time in the country this season.
 
Through the opening night of competition, the Bears lead the team standings with 128 points. Rounding out the standings is Minnesota (112), Harvard (106), UNLV (106) and Denver (100).
 
The meet resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m. PT with the prelims of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle. Diving prelims begin at 11 a.m. PT, while day two wraps up with the finals at 4 p.m. PT.
