Rowan Hamilton was one of two Bears to improve their own program record on Friday.
SEATTLE - California track & field kicked off the last indoor regular-season meet of the 2024 campaign on Friday, joining several other squads from across the western United States at Washington's Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. As they have in each meet to date this season, the Golden Bears posted yet another historic outing, as seniors
Skyler Magula (pole vault) and
Rowan Hamilton (weight throw) improved upon their school records while three other Cal athletes recorded program top-10 entries.
Magula was one of Cal's first competitors of the day and started the meet off with a bang, recording a 5.38m (17-7.75) clearance to begin his series before sailing over the bar at 5.53m (18-1.75) on his first attempt to surpass his own program mark. He was the only man at the meet to clear that particular height, thus clinching the first win of his indoor season and bettering his chances at claiming a spot at the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships.
Over at the circle, Hamilton one-upped his performance from two weeks ago when he broke the weight throw program record in his indoor debut, raising that mark to 22.36m (73-4) on Friday to increase his own potential of earning a spot at the NCAA Championships; Hamilton's throw was only second to Washington's Jayden White, who set a facility and meet record with a toss of 23.73m (77-10). Cal's other competitor in the event, senior
Ivar Moisander, also acquitted himself very well with a personal-best 20.03m (65-8) that moved him up from fourth to second in program history. He and Hamilton are the only two Bears to date to cross the 20-meter barrier in the event.
Cal's No. 10 men's long jump squad proved its mettle once again this week, making up nearly half of the final as four of its competitors earned spots in the top nine after three attempts. Two of those men – senior
Mason Mangum and sophomore
Jason Plumb – went on to earn top-three finishes, with Mangum's 7.70m (25-3.25) taking second place and Plumb's 7.40m (24-3.5) taking third. The Bears' other ranked unit, the No. 18 men's 60m group, followed up by sending all three of its own competitors to the final. Junior
David Foster's PR-tying 6.54 would have set a new meet record had it not been for winner Travis Williams (6.52) of USC; senior
Chase Williams was the second of Cal's finishers at 6.71, while Mangum smashed his personal best by .16 in his second event of the day to leap onto the program top-10 list with a No. 4 6.72. Breakout freshman
Donovan Bradley, meanwhile, posted a new PR for the third straight competition, finishing only behind NCAA leader Johnny Brackins Jr. of USC (7.55) with a 7.79 that improved his program No. 4 entry.
On the women's side, Cal had two additional top-three finishes. Freshman
Adrianna Coleman (19.47m/63-10) took second place in the women's weight throw, trailing only Washington's Beatrice Asomaning and her throw of 21.65m (71-0). Top sprinter
Makhaila Mills, a junior, won her heat in the 60m prelims to reach the final; she took third with a time of 7.34. Senior
Busola Akinduro also qualified for her event final in the long jump, finishing with a leap of 5.72m (18-9.25).
Cal also had several athletes appear in the multi-events. In the men's heptathlon, redshirt freshman
Seth Johnson finished day one of competition with a team-leading 2958 points to stand at sixth overall in the field, particularly impressing in the high jump with a third-place mark of 1.92m (6-3.5). Junior
Riley Knott did one better in that event, finishing second with his leap of 1.98m (6-6); he is currently in eighth place after four events with 2928 points. Redshirt freshman
Luke Buddie (2884 points) and sophomore
Parker Terrill (2761 points) round out the group. The Bears also had two entries in the women's pentathlon: sophomore
Torre Anderson improved her personal best to 3472 points, racing to a PR of 2:34.53 in the 800m, while redshirt freshman
Mara Lampsas competed in her first multi in the Blue & Gold to finish at 3039 points.
