Bill McClintock To Receive Pete Newell Award

Hall-Of-Famer Will Be Honored At Feb. 10 Men's Basketball Game

BERKELEY – Bill McClintock, a 2021 California Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and member of the Golden Bears' 1959 NCAA championship squad and 1960 NCAA runner-up team, is the 2023-24 recipient of the Pete Newell Career Achievement Award. McClintock will be honored during Cal's home game against UCLA on Saturday, which will serve as the Pete Newell Classic.

The award honors the legacy of Cal's Hall of Fame basketball coach and the contributions Newell made to the program. The career achievement award is presented annually to a Cal men's basketball alumnus who has distinguished himself in his career accomplishments, upholding the highest ideals of Newell and the University of California.

McClintock, who spent his first collegiate season at Monterey Peninsula College, played his sophomore and junior seasons at Cal under Newell. He maintained a close relationship with the legendary coach after his playing days, including longstanding involvement with Newell's Big Man and Tall Woman camps for post players.

"I'm honored and humbled to receive the Pete Newell Career Achievement Award," McClintock said. "I accept this award on behalf of my teammates, as Pete Newell always stressed the fact that team accomplishments are greater than individual ones. He also taught us to give back to others; I've really tried to do that my whole adult life, not only in basketball but in the field of education. Thank you to the Newell family and Cal's selection committee for this honor."

A 6-foot-4 forward for the Golden Bears, McClintock totaled eight points in Cal's 71-70 victory over West Virginia in the '59 title game and started for Cal the following season. A two-time all-conference selection, he earned honorable mention All-America honors as a junior (1959-60) and third-team All-America recognition as a senior (1960-61). McClintock received the Nibs Price Award as Cal's MVP in 1960-61 and the team's Most Inspirational Award in 1959-60. He finished his career with 740 rebounds (8.8 RPG), which ranked second in school history at the time (now 10th). He also ranks 11th on Cal's season rebounding list with 289 from 1959-60 (10.6 RPG) and grabbed a career-best 20 rebounds at UCLA in 1961. As a senior, he led the Bears in scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.6 RPG).

McClintock was selected 54th overall in the sixth round of the 1961 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers but did not play in the NBA. He instead pursued a career in education, both through the game of basketball and academics. He coached basketball at the NCAA Division I, NAIA and high school levels, most notably as an assistant coach for the University of San Francisco's 1972 Sweet 16 run, as well as serving as the head coach and athletics director at Cal State Monterey Bay.

McClintock devoted himself to continuation education and spent the remaining years of his teaching career at Foothill Middle College in Los Altos, where he was instrumental in helping high-school level juniors and seniors who needed a change from the traditional high school environment reach their full potential. McClintock was a co-founder of the Foothill Middle College program and served as an employee of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union School District.

"I'm most pleased with my accomplishments in education, and I think they're equal to my accomplishments in basketball," McClintock said.

The Pete Newell Classic between Cal and UCLA will tip off at 2:30 p.m. PST inside Haas Pavilion.
